We are the cervical spine specialists.

The Southwestern Ontario Cervical Spine Centre is a group of clinicians and researchers dedicated to improving the lives of patients with cervical spine disorders.

Dr. Neil Duggal, MD, MSc: Dr. Duggal earned his MD at the University of Ottawa in 1992. After a neurosurgical residency at Western University, he completed a one-year fellowship at Barrow Neurological Institute in Phoenix, Arizona. Dr. Duggal has been a practicing neurosurgeon since 2000, specializing in treating cervical disorders, and he was the first surgeon in North America to perform artificial disc replacement surgery in the cervical spine. Dr. Duggal also has a strong interest in research, collaborating with researchers such as Dr. Rob Bartha on spine-related research. See the Research page for a list of his publications.

Dr. Rob Bartha, PhD: Dr. Bartha is a Professor of Medical Biophysics at Western University, and a Scientist in the Imaging Research Group at the Robarts Research Institute. His research has focused on the development of high-field magnetic resonance imaging and spectroscopy methods for early diagnosis of disease and on identifying specific imaging biomarkers of disease progression in a variety of neurological diseases, including spinal cord compression. Dr. Bartha and Dr. Duggal have been collaborating for over 15 years to identify biomarkers in the brain and spine of patients with cervical myelopathy.

Jennifer Murphy, RN: Jennifer has been a registered nurse for 18 years, with a focus on neurosurgery and critical care. She works with Dr. Duggal in his clinic, as well as acting as his research nurse. Jennifer is the primary point of contact for patients participating in the Cervical Spine Centre’s research studies.

Sarah Detombe, PhD: Sarah completed her PhD in Medical Biophysics at Western University in 2012. Since 2018, she has worked with Drs. Duggal and Bartha to coordinate the spine-related research conducted at the Cervical Spine Centre. See the Research page for a description of the research studies that are currently active.

Jennifer Long: Jenn has been Dr. Duggal’s administrative assistant and serves as the initial point of contact for the Cervical Spine Centre.
